United Hebrew Recognized for LGBTQ+ Inclusive Senior Care

In a significant stride towards inclusivity, United Hebrew proudly announces its attainment of the esteemed SAGECare credential, reaffirming its dedication to fostering a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ older adults. This partnership with SAGECare underscores United Hebrew’s commitment to providing exceptional care and services tailored to the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals.

The journey towards this recognition stems from a fundamental understanding of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ seniors, many of whom have encountered prejudice or discrimination within healthcare and aging services. United Hebrew recognizes this critical need for safe and welcoming spaces and is proud to take proactive steps to address it.

Rita Mabli, President & CEO of United Hebrew, emphasizes the importance of creating environments where everyone feels respected and valued. “With anti-LGBTQ+ extremism on the rise, it is more important than ever to create safer spaces for LGBTQ+ people and that includes the places we age,” she says.

Creating a Supportive Community

SAGECare, a national training program developed by Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE), equips senior care providers with the cultural competency necessary to serve LGBTQ+ residents effectively. United Hebrew’s commitment to this program is evident in its rigorous staff training, inclusive policies, and resident support services.

Nora O’Brien, Executive Director of Assisted Living and Memory Care at United Hebrew, highlights the impact of SAGECare training on staff awareness and resident support. “Working with SAGE has increased our team’s awareness of the unique life experiences, needs, and preferences of our LGBTQ residents and their families,” she notes.

The SAGECare credential reflects United Hebrew’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment where LGBTQ+ seniors can thrive. Through rigorous staff training, inclusive policies, and resident support services, United Hebrew ensures that all residents, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, receive the respect and care they deserve.

“At United Hebrew, everything we do is geared toward being welcoming,” O’Brien affirms. “The training has helped us avoid assumptions and create a space where everyone feels comfortable being themselves.”

To date, United Hebrew’s assisted living and memory care communities have earned the credential, with plans to expand the program to its nursing home underway.

A Pledge for the Future

United Hebrew’s attainment of the SAGECare credential is not just a milestone; it’s a testament to the organization’s ongoing commitment to providing exceptional care for all seniors. By prioritizing inclusivity and cultural competency, United Hebrew ensures that LGBTQ+ older adults find a vibrant and supportive community where they can truly thrive.

As Mabli expresses, “We believe in fostering a community where everyone feels respected, valued, and celebrated for who they are. This credential reaffirms our dedication to providing an inclusive environment that prioritizes the well-being of all residents.”

United Hebrew of New Rochelle continues to lead the way in LGBTQ+ inclusive senior care, setting a standard of excellence for communities nationwide.
